Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on National Healthy Schools Day
Washington, DC – Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement on National Healthy Schools Day:
“According to the Centers for Disease Control, an African American child is more likely to have asthma than any other child in America today. Poor indoor air quality in schools contributes to respiratory illnesses, including asthma. The Congressional Black Caucus supports National Healthy Schools Day 2011 because improving indoor air quality will help to lower school absenteeism due to chronic disease and give all American children an opportunity to learn in a healthier environment. Nearly 50 million children attend public schools every day, yet only a small number of states address risks to children in schools with programs to promote greener facility practices. The CBC remains committed to ensuring that our children have a healthy environment in which to learn and thrive both in school and society.”
