Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on President Obama’s Speech on Deficit Reduction
Washington, DC – Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement on President Obama’s speech on deficit reduction:
“Today, President Obama proposed a balanced, reasoned approach to protect hardworking American families, honor our commitments to seniors, invest in our communities, and reduce the deficit. The President’s vision is both fiscally responsible and morally sound.
“The Republican Leadership’s plan, in contrast, places the burden of debt reduction on the backs of our nation’s most vulnerable communities. It ends Medicare as we know it and raises health care costs for seniors and strips our communities of vital programs. It is clear that their allegiance remains with the rich.
“I look forward to a serious effort to balance the budget responsibly and reasonably, but not on the backs of our most vulnerable communities. The Congressional Black Caucus is eager to work with the Obama Administration on strengthening the foundation for our children in making the great promise of America, the practice of America.”
