Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on Earth Day
Washington, DC – Today Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement on Earth Day:
“Earth Day is a time to reflect on our responsibility as a nation to care for, respect and honor our environment. The environmental movement has led our communities to cleaner water, air and landscapes for millions of Americans. As Earth Day has inspired us to tackle many environmental issues we’ve faced, it is my sincere hope that it will continue to inspire us as we move forward to fight global warming, pollution and the attempts to eradicate the Environmental Protection Agency.
“It is a fact that our nation’s most vulnerable and low income communities, frequently communities of color, suffer disproportionately from environmental pollutants. With our communities neighboring with inefficient Oil Refineries, we are more prone to breathe in toxic air. I am committed, along with the CBC, to ensure that we put an end to unhealthy environments for our families.
“Ironically, this week also marked the one year anniversary of the devastating Gulf oil spill. The spill was a clear example of why we need strong oversight and sensible policies to end our nation’s fossil fuel addiction. The last thing we need are cuts to investments in clean energy technologies. Investment in clean energy is an investment in our nation’s economic future, and the healthy and prosperous future of our children’s children.”
-Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II
