Chairman Cleaver’s Statement Celebrating Juneteenth

Washington, DC – Today, Chairman Emanuel Cleaver released the following statement celebrating Juneteenth:

“It was three years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that on June 19, 1865, Texas slaves received the news that the nation’s slaves were free. This announcement sparked celebration in the streets as our ancestors rejoiced and celebrated their new found freedom. Today, we recognize that momentous day and pay homage to our ancestors for enduring the horrors of the Middle Passage, rising above slavery, pressing through desegregation, and fighting to give their children access to the American Dream. Today, through the 43 Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, the fight continues.”
