Readout of the CBC Meeting with the Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan

Washington, DC – Earlier today, the Congressional Black Caucus held their first full Caucus meeting of the year with Department of Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, building upon its longstanding commitment to address the education needs of the most vulnerable. In a substantive and wide-ranging discussion, the CBC addressed a myriad of  issues including early childhood education, teacher recruitment, funding for HBCUs, dropout rates and student achievement. Members also inquired about a White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans similar to the initiative established for the Hispanic community. Members also discussed the career readiness in response to our remarkably high unemployment numbers. The meeting reflected our ongoing relationship and agreement to continue the conversation on key issues.
