Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on the Agreement to Extend the Payroll Tax Cut

Washington, D.C. – Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement today on the agreement to extend the payroll tax cut, unemployment benefits, and the Medicare physician fee:
“I am pleased that the Republican Leadership finally listened to their better selves.  This victory belongs to the American people.  Because of their diligence 160 million hard working American families will continue to receive their payroll tax cuts – about $1,000 in the pockets of the average family.  Millions of our citizens hurt by the recession will receive their unemployment benefits, which serves as a lifeline for many Americans looking for work.

“I look forward to the House and Senate’s swift action tomorrow that will help to provide confidence and security for millions of American families. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus along with President Obama, remain committed to working together to create a year-long agreement to extend the payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance as well as ensure that seniors can continue to see the doctor of their choice. It is now my hope that we can finally continue to work on behalf of the people.”
