Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on the Passing of Congressional Black Caucus Member Katie Hall

Washington, DC – Chairman Emanuel Cleaver II, released the following statement on passing of Congresswoman Katie Hall:

“On behalf of the 43 members of the Congressional Black Caucus, I want to express my deepest condolences to the friends and family of Congresswoman Katie Hall. I am grateful to now chair the organization Congresswoman Katie Hall contributed much to during her public service in the United States Congress.

“During her tenure in the House of Representative, Congresswoman Hall was able to play a key role in getting approval for the federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Before her arrival the proposal for this holiday was stalled in the house for 14 years. Ms. Hall used her post as Chairwoman of the Post Office and Civil Service subcommittee to assure the bill’s passage. In addition to her legislative accomplishments, Congresswoman Hall was the first African American to represent the state of Indiana in the House of Representatives.

“Even though her long career in public service has now ended, her legacy lives on every third Monday in January and beyond.

“Congresswoman Hall’s family and friends remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

- Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II
