Chairman Cleaver’s Statement on the Passing of John A. Payton

Washington, DC – Today, Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement on the passing of John A. Payton, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund:

“I was saddened to hear about the passing of John Payton, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. John spent his career fighting for the civil rights of all Americans. John Payton fought for and won major victories on a myriad of important cases ranging from voting rights, to affirmative action. I am grateful for his time here on earth and for the major impact his legacy has left, not only on the African American community, but on our nation. His experience and wisdom will be missed in the CBC’s continued fight to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or creed, have a fair shot to achieve the American Dream. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Payton’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
