CBC Chairman Emanuel Cleaver’s Statement on World AIDS Day

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day:

“Today we join together to recognize and reaffirm our commitment to the global fight against HIV/AIDS. We also use today to celebrate how far we’ve come in making significant advances in treatment, prevention and in working to eliminate the undue stigmas often placed upon those living with the disease.

“This day is particularly important to members of the African American community as we continue to disproportionately face higher rates of HIV/AIDS infection. Our focus must remain on educating our friends and family on ways to lower the risk of exposure and transmission, and creating a culture of understanding when discussing ways to fight the epidemic in our community.

“Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, and particularly Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) founding Co-Chair of the Congressional HIV/AIDS caucus, realize the global fight against HIV/AIDS is one the greatest human rights issues of our time, and we will continue to lead the charge and champion the fight against HIV/AIDS in our communities and worldwide. “
